JBLM Job Fair Showcases State Employment Opportunities
JOINT BASE LEWIS-McCHORD, Wash. – Staff Sergeant Danika Nolan’s military exit date is a few weeks away, and she’s getting ready for the shift at Lewis-McChord.
As part of a group of about 30 job candidates, she participated in an employing reasonable Jan. 30 that showcased Washington State profession chances at JBLM’s Hawk Career Center.
“I simply try to benefit from all the resources and services that the (Transition Assistance Program) Center has to offer, simply to make sure I’m as prepared as possible,” she said.
The focus of the task fair on state employment, employment instead of employment in numerous markets, made it different than others on the installation. Sponsored by the Veterans Employee Resource Group, WorkSource and the TAP, it began with a panel of veterans from state companies, who shared their experiences and answered concerns. Following the panel, recruiters from state firms were offered to respond to employing questions, stated Frank Handoe, deputy shift services supervisor for the TAP.
Informational tables represented companies consisting of VERG, WorkSource and Washington State’s Department of Veterans Affairs and VA Apprenticeship Program; Department of Children, Youth and Families; Department of Social and Health Services, employment Community Services Division; and Office of the Insurance Commissioner.
A quarterly event, the job fair is “a low-stress, low-pressure opportunity to discover out what type of chances exist here outdoors your back entrance,” said Christopher Gentz, shift services supervisor for the Directorate of Human Resources.
Additional job fairs like the Jan. 30 event will be held May 8, July 10 and Sept. 11.
To prepare for them, “dress for success,” bring your resume and practice your elevator pitch, employment Gentz stated.
An elevator pitch is a “fast introduction of yourself, who you are and what you’re wanting to do,” Handoe said, pointing out that the skill is taught as part of the TAP.
Among the task fair’s objectives was to help individuals learn more about career chances and how their abilities line up with them, Gentz stated.
Education is an essential advantage of attending a task fair, as about 40% of those who start with the TAP discover they’re “not ready to make that dive yet,” or employment they have seen the readily available opportunities and decide to continue serving, Gentz stated.
“We see that generally every year,” he stated. “We desire them to make an informed decision about their career.”
Part of the education piece is discovering about finances, including credit reports, spending plans and “developing a savings so you have something to work with when it’s time to get out,” Handoe said.
“Everybody’s going to get out of the Army at some point,” he stated, “however while you’re in, are you doing everything you can to prepare to get out?”
Job fairs also exist to help people with networking, seeing what people in the outdoors world are looking for – including accreditations, accreditations and education – and finding out about their hiring practices, Handoe said.
“You must be doing prep work now for what it is you wish to do later down the roadway,” he stated.
That prep work includes getting ready for employment job fairs.
“You require to enter into a hiring reasonable with a plan of what you’re going to do and not simply meander around,” Handoe said.
He discussed that attendees should identify the business they desire to consult with and research study them ahead of time, to permit for educated conversations with employers.
Nolan enjoyed the Jan. 30 job fair and spoke with some recruiters. A senior infotech specialist with the 16th Combat Aviation Unit, she has found she wishes to serve those who serve in her upcoming civilian function.
